While all businesses should be marketing every day, today is the day to PLAN. To lay the groundwork, to write down your ideas. To touch people without marketing to them. Call this your “Un-Marketing Planning Day.” It is a day to lay all those Quirky Ideas out and plan for how you will implement them.

To jump-start your quirky ideas or un-marketing mindset, here are twelve activities you can employ each and every day to get those creative juices flowing:

1 Plan your networking calendar for the week.

2 Write a thank-you note to a prospect or customer.

3 Enter customer or prospect names into a database.

4 Brainstorm some quirky new tagline ideas – ask for input from colleagues and friends.

5 Visit your main competitor’s website and then someone in your industry that is not in direct competition with you.

6 Write an article to pitch to your local business magazine or newspapter.

7 Make a list of quirky press release topics and headlines.

8 Create a survey that you can use to garner information from your prospects and customers.

9 Which products do you offer that can use a facelift? Start by renaming them.

10 Work on quirky new product ideas.

11 Visit a few marketing-related websites such as association websites and marketing professionals.

12 Look at the list of benefits your company offers and compare to it to your competitors’ benefits and offerings.

Hundreds of Angelinos gathered at the iconic Hustler Hollywood store to celebrate safe, FUN sex.

Aiming to promote safe sex in a fun, new way, the event featured a Screaming O Vibrating Condom Pack giveaway, games and prizes, educational information, out-of-the-box safe sex tips, a live DJ and The Screaming O’s very own Scream Team! MTV’s Kenny Santucci even stopped by to support the cause. The Screaming O Vibrating Condom Packs also included invitations to an exclusive after party that followed at West Hollywood’s MI-6 night club. The Scream Team passed out condoms and vibrating rings, ensuring that partygoers were well-protected on their wild night out. The night proved to be a great success, showing that safety and pleasure are a match made in heaven.

Today is also: Boardwalk Day. On June 26, 1870 the beginnings of the Atlantic City boardwalk was opened to the public. Alexander Boardman, a railroad conductor, came up with the idea of constructing a boardwalk as a means of keeping sand out of the railroad cars and hotels. The eight-foot-wide temporary wooden walkway from the beach into town was used for tax revenues during the summer months and then dismantled the walkway during the winter.

Today I was listening to the radio and the daily trivia said that on this date in history in 1973 Helen Ready first appeared on the hit show “Midnight Special.” So I thought it would be interesting to talk about midnight specials as they relate to business and marketing.

Walmart Does it. Bars Do it. Department Stores Do it. Restaurants Do it too! What? They host “midnight specials.” Over the last two decades or so, midnight specials have become less frequent as so many establishments are open regularly past midnight. But some merchants still feel the urge to host a midnight special to lure their customers out at the witching hour. In fact, department stores have been known for holding annual clearance sales beginning at midnight and running until the next morning. Only to close for an hour or two before “regular hours” resume.

WalMart is notorious for Black Friday midnight specials and people often line the sidewalks waiting patiently (or impatiently) for the doors to open.

Stores host a Halloween Eve midnight special complete with costume regaled sales clerks, refreshments and spooky sounds playing in the background.

New Years Eve is another special opportunity for merchants to host their own midnight specials. When the clock ticks to 12:00 AM people can go to their favorite store and preview the “new Merchandise for the new year or take advantage of “last year’s” stuff that has been heavily reduced for clearance.

But why wait until Black Friday, Halloween or New Years Eve?

You can host a midnight special just about anytime and it can be even more successful because “everyone else” isn’t doing it at the same time. Create a VIP party and invite your best customers via a well crafted, quality postcard campaign. To easily track your campaign success, ask your customers to have to bring the invitation to gain admittance.

Other tips:
*Use email to remind them.
*And complement your invitation with flyers, sales letters and posters.
*Use mobile marketing to get their attention.

when planning your Midnight Special direct-marketing campaign, having a current mailing list of your customers, is the most powerful tool you can use to spread the word about your Midnight Special.

And let’s not forget Social Media. Be sure to spread the word on your Facebook page, LinkedIn events page and Twitter. Who knows, you might just meet some phone or internet customers who have never set foot in your establishment before.

“In Hollywood a girl’s virtue is much less important than her hairdo. You’re judged by how you look, not by what you are. Hollywood’s a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for kiss, and fifty cents for your soul.” Marilyn Monroe

You could replace the words In Hollywood with Online and Here’s what you’d get:
“How you appear (are perceived) online is often more important than how you really are. Small companies can be celebrities on the Internet just as Norma Jean becameMarilyn Monroe to her fans. The Internet is a place where you can look like a Big Star even if you are small midwest gal working out of your home (or home office).” Heidi Richards Mooney

Today is Marilyn Monroe day and in honor of what would have been her 85th birthday, here are a seven tips to help you stand out online and be that BIG STAR you were destined to become:

1. Be Yourself. “Wanting to be someone else, is a waste of the person you are.” Marilyn Monroe. Even online people can spot a fake. Or a copycat. Being yourself is so much easier. And less tiring.

2. Build Your Brand Online with Social Media. Today it is easier than ever to leverage social media to get noticed. Use LinkedIn for Professional Development, Facebook to have conversations with your following and Twitter to become a Thought Leader by sharing bits of your BEST STUFF. Remember to interact with others, listen, share and promote them too.

3. Stand Out. Marily Monroe said, “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Don’t be boring! There are a lot of YouTube Celebrities that became BIG STARS because they were willing to risk the ridiculous over the boring.

4. Find out who your customers are. There are a number of tools to help you understand who your customers are and what makes them tick. Tools like Compete.com, Google, Nielsen and comscore allow you to learn more about your audience such as gender, age, marital status, household income, and locale.

5. Connect and Reconnect. “Girls will be your friends – they’ll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything – they’re your true best friends. Don’t let go of them.” Marilyn Monroe. Connect with people before you need them. Reconnect with people you have not talked to in a while such as old friends, colleagues, classmates. Build the relationships before you actually NEED them. When you leverage those offline relationships you grow your brand and your reputation online.

6. Promote Others online. When you promote others online its like being a really good listener. People who listen well are generally thought of as great conversationalists. Why? Because they let others do more of the talking than they do. Believe me when you promote others, their friends, fans and followers notice and want to get in on the action. Let them!

7. Don’t do what everyone else is doing online. “I just want to be wonderful.” Marilyn Monroe Be different. If your competition is having a contest, have a race. If your competition is giving something away, sell something. Be unique. Anyone can be different, but to be Unique you are “one of a kind.”

Marilyn Monroe said it best: “We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle.“

Most of us have a good idea how to follow up with people we have just met, but do you have a system in place for following up with those that already support you by purchasing your products and services? Equally important if not more so, are the steps we take to keep our companies top of mind with our clients. Not only will it solidify a relationship, you will also find out about any problems they are having before the problem gets out of hand and when you can do the most good. Not to mention you are much more likely to benefit from ongoing referrals when you follow up on a regular basis.

Here’s a simple “letter-writing /communications system” to keep those precious clients in your business life:

The letter can be a “how are you doing,” letter.

A “how are WE doing letter” to find out how you are measuring up to the clients expectations.

A letter listing other services you provide; many times clients use us for one thing not having any idea how many other services we offer.

A letter asking what other services they need that you may not have thought of but could offer.

A letter updating them on happenings in your company.

A letter with “changes in the industy” that might affect them or the services you provide.

A letter with a special offer, such as a thank you for your business, here’s a special we are having for our preferred clients.

A letter requesting referrals/ endorsements/ testimonials (this letter can be combined with one or more of the above).

A letter asking what other services they need that you may not have thought of but could offer.

Birthday/milestone letters, cards and postcards are also great to celebrate an annual event such as their birthday or the birthday of one of their family members or an anniversary. And really any letter of congratulations is great acknowledgement that you know what is going on in the lives of your clients and customers.

Other follow up strategies:

Pick up the phone and just ask how the client is doing? Don’t sell just say “Hi!”

BTW, if you are invoicing clients for work done, it is perfectly acceptable to include the letters in your invoices. The only exception would be the Birthday or milestone letter. Send that separately.

If a customer/client stops using your services, that is perhaps the most critical time to follow up. Send them a letter telling them you are sorry to see them go (provided you are) and hope that if their circumstances change they will consider your company for their needs in the future. If you do not know why they left, a phone call with a follow up letter is not only common courtesy, it can sometimes repair any damages done and even get the customer back! Never burn bridges! Consider keeping them on your mailing list to send something once a year or more.

Soap Operas got their start in Radio as did the advertisers who promoted their products to the housewife and stay-at-home moms of the day. The term ”soap opera” was coined by the American press in the 1930s partly because of the strong support of companies promoting household cleaning products and the fact that the actors “dramatized” their lives on the screen through dialog.

In fact, Soap Operas, or daytime dramas as they are now called, have experienced immense popularity over the past fifty years and has even moved to prime time television with the likes of Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters (in the US) as well as other countries around the globe via chronologically serialized programs.

Of course, Soap Operas are not just for housewives anymore. The daytime drama audience now includes professionals of both sexes who unwind after a hard day at the office by watching their prerecorded soaps when they get home. And College Students watch “Soaps” in their dorm rooms with their roomies and friends.

You can learn more about the history of Soap Operas by watching this brief informative video:

Remember to follow up. A good follow up system could include the following:

1. A phone call to say it was nice to meet you

2. A shout out on a social networking site

3. A card or postcard in the mail

4. A hand-written note

5. Sending a small gift

6. Stopping by and leaving a card and a cookie or donuts or new magazine or book (or a tschotcke from your business)

7. An email message to include nice meeting the person with an invitation to something such as another networking event and/or a FREE resource the person might find of value.

Make a game of it. See how many hands you can shake in a day… then the next day try to beat that number. Do this weekly and add up the number of hands you shake. At the end of the month, tally up the score. Start over next month and see if you can beat that score. Share your score with your circle. Invite them to “play.” Have an accountability partner. Someone you can share your goals with. Do your best to meet those goals. Its even okay to exceed them. Or not. Make it a contest. Give away a prize… Or win a prize.

Any good copywriter will tell you words sell products (and services). Many times people will look at a picture and have the desire to achieve an outcome or be like the photo portrays but it’s the words that get most people to hand over money for your product or service. Words tell the story behind the picture. Words will make your copy stand out, get noticed and more importantly get results! Before you publish a single word, here are four tips to get you started.

1. Take a look at your product or service from the customer’s perspective. Make a list of all the benefits (what the customer will gain from using your product) and features (the reasons or justification for buying the product). Prioritize your lists in order of importance.

2. Now look at what makes your product different or superior to your competitor’s products. What do you offer that your competition does not? This is called positioning. Positioning will help you develop the right strategy to sell.

“Customers don’t want to be befuddled by specialized language any more than you want to be hit with all medical lingo when you go to the doctor. So, speak, write, and present in a language and manner the audience will understand.” Dave Green

3. Who is your target audience? What are their needs, wants and motivations to buy? Are they rich, poor, educated, young, older, professionals, blue collar workers, etc.?

4. Create your plan. What do you need to say to get your point across and how many words or “copy” will you need to make your point. While it is not always the case, a general rule of thumb is that the greater the investment in a product or service, the more copy you will need to convey the message. Keep in mind, there are exceptions to this rule. Simple products/services with well-known (evident) benefits will require less explaining than those that are more complicated.
