July 12th is Tom Sawyer Day

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was Mark Twain’s first novel. When it was first published in 1876 Tom Sawyer was a failure but it led to other great books which had a better reception during Samuel Clement’s life (Mark Twain was his Penn name). Twain went on to write the great “Huckleberry Finn” and other stories of childhood or the Mississippi Valley. Tom Sawyer became an American classic and today is the most popular of all his books today.
Did you know: The fictional character’s name may have derived from a real-life Tom Sawyer with whom Twain was acquainted in San Francisco, California, while Twain was employed as a reporter at the San Francisco Call. The character himself is an amalgamation of three boys Twain knew while growing up (source: Wikipedia).
