How do you use water to market your business? Do what Wall Drug did! GIVE it away…
In fact, Wall Drug gets 2 million visitors a Year through their stores using a simple marketing tactic. Giving something away. But not just anything! Something people want and NEED.During the Great Depressing (in the early 1930′s) Wall Drug was strugling like other companies of the time. But that didn’t stopDorothy Hustead. She decided to be proactive to get people through her doors. You see she was a stop on the way to Yellowstone Park and instead of people either passing by or stopping in for one or two items before reaching their destination, she wanted Wall Drug to be a place for people to congregate and take a break. So had a brainstorm and that was to put up road signs along the nearby highway offering free ice water to weary travelers on their way to the Black Hills and Yellowstone.
Wall Drug gave shoppers a reason to linger. And by lingering, travelers fell in love with the place.
That simple, yet well-thought out advertising campaign made Wall Drug a legend in marketing and an international icon. What once was simple a roadside stop along the way to the “main attraction,” has become a to a must-visit tourist destination that has spread far and wide through word-of-mouth.
By the way, when you do stop, they still have that free water.
Along with a Wall’s own brand of bottled water for $1.09! (Good idea!)
