Today is Sesame Street Day

In 1969 The children’s TV show Sesame Street debuted on PBS. Over the past 41 + years Sesame Street has taught children many lessons. And some even us adults can learn from.  They would sing:
“One of these things is not like the others,
One of  these things just doesn’t belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song ?”

Of course the object was to pick the one thing in the “crowd” that stood out from all the others. Similar to those puzzles you were given as a child where you were to pick the one that was “different” from the other pictures.

Today with all the purchasing choices we have in life it can be paralyzing for the consumer AND for the business owner. With 27 different types of tissues and hundreds of toothpastes and thousands of business coaches, how can a business be different enough to make a difference? To Stand Out?  It used to be (just a few short years ago) that customer service made businesses stand out. Not so today. With everyone vying for market share, good customer service just levels the playing field.  You have to be different from the competition. From your marketing message to your service to your product to your delivery.

The marketing lesson here is to be creative and solve specific needs in the market place and you’ll reap the  rewards by getting the lion’s share of the market. The simple marketing concept for small business today is to be different, stand out and you will be noticed. Stand out from the crowd or be lost in the crowd.

So does YOUR business pass the Sesame Street test?

November 10th is also Forget-me-not Day ~ And when you stand out from a crowd you will be unforgettable. Today you could send a pack of Forget-Me-Not seeds with a message reminding them to remember you during the holiday season.
